In 2008 I set out on a road that would literally change my life. I didn’t know it at the time, but it did. Out of the blue I decided to attend Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within conference in Los Angeles and I had no idea what I would experience in those four days, but I went with excitement, some fear and great anticipation. I had been a follower of Tony’s for a long time and something said it was time to take the leap and go to a live event. The day I walked on fire – life changed.
That’s right…you walk on fire! I knew that was part of the event, but I also knew that you didn’t have to participate so I went with the understanding that I was not going to partake in fire walking. I was wrong.
Fire walking as I found out, was only a small part of the entire weekend and you do it the first night! You don’t build up to this as the finale – nope…you end the first night walking across 15 feet of hot molten coals! I’m not kidding – not even a little bit.
It’s totally crazy to think about walking on red hot coals, but fire walking is a transformative part of the seminar and it’s a metaphor for creating breakthroughs – facing and overcoming your fears. And it works!
I don’t have a video of my walk. You’ll have to trust me that I actually did it and made it across without a single burn on my feet or ankles, but I’m sharing Oprah’s fire walk so you can see exactly what this experience is like. (Do not try this at home. You must be supervised and you must have a coach who is an expert at the fire walking training to guide you.)
As you just witnessed Fire Walking takes guts…trust…courage…bravery…and more trust. Fire walking is not for the faint of heart, but you should also know…
Fire Walking Changes Everything Forever!
We’ve talked about how our brains get in the way of anything that requires us to change, so you can only imagine how my brain was totally freaking out as I made my way to the fire. Thankfully Tony Robbins is a master at superseding the brain chatter. At the time, I felt like I was having an out of body experience – like this couldn’t possibly be me, barefoot and about to walk across crimson coals! I learned that night how to change my physical and mental state and I also learned that if I had stood on the sidelines and not participated, I would have regretted it forever. Some things you just know you have to do – TERROR or not!
I walked with total confidence and my friend was on the other side cheering me on with thousands of other attendees. We were strangers who were united because our lives would never be the same again.
The remainder of the weekend was even more intense than the fire walk, but I have to tell you – it’s life changing in every possible way. It’s empowering and freeing and you learn to move forward and how to get over yourself and the story you’ve been telling yourself and living. You leave knowing that anything is possible.
Here’s how fire walking changed me…
First and foremost – I DID IT!
I learned strategies to kick fear to the side of the road.
I use those strategies in my daily life.
When I feel afraid, I stop and remember my fire walk as a metaphor for my life. Struggles and obstacles are not meant to stop us. They’re put in our path so we can grow and trust our instincts and keep moving forward!
When you walk through fire (the one thing humans try and avoid) you know that you’re unstoppable and that there is a power that lives within you and you only need to unleash in order to move mountains.
Fear is the robber of dreams and a thief of your life. I’ve witnessed fear paralyzing too many individuals who got caught in its grip and never escaped. Learning ways to conquer or at the very least, manage fear, is key to becoming a Lionhearted Woman.
You don’t have to walk on fire to beat fear, but as you move through your life, you must learn ways to grab it – manage it – and eventually send it packing. It will always accompany change and growth, but once you have the tools to keep it in check – watch your life GROW!
Where are you in this process? How can I help you? What would you like to do that your not because fear has you in its grip?
