The news of late is horrific. Once again, we find ourselves struggling knowing how to respond; how to react; how to live without fear; what to say and what to do and I’m reminded why planning for some day is a waste of your life.
Do you have a dream about something that you’d like to do…something that would light up your life? Do you lie in bed at night and think about it? Do you wonder what it would feel like to do your something? Does it excite you?
And then do you say to yourself…”Some day I’ll do that.” Planning for Some Day is never going to get you what you want, because some day is not promised to anyone.
Some day is the day in the distant future when you’ve taken care of all your responsibilities…when your children are grown…you’ve retired from your career…your bills are paid…and basically life doesn’t show up with all its highs and lows and challenges.
Some day NEVER happens.
You have dreams and big ideas for a reason and they’re meant to be explored. You’re meant to live out your dreams! If you wait for some day, you tell TODAY that it has no relevance and yet…TODAY is all we are guaranteed.
Growing up I remember hearing my grandparents say that they were saving money so that some day they could take a trip to Europe. They saved and saved and saved and when they finally had the money, my grandfather had a debilitating stroke and travel was out of the question. Their some day never came.
My other grandmother lost her husband at age 55…lived with my handicapped aunt and raised her two grandsons and had very little money. She struggled…but boy did she LIVE! She wanted to take a cruise to Australia and somehow she figured out how to take that trip with my aunt who was wheelchair bound, because she knew that some day might never happen.
That trip created lifelong memories for the two of them and you know what? Armageddon did not happen because they took a vacation and used up some of her precious money. She put LIFE before SOME DAY!
What is one thing you keep on the back burner? What would happen if you actually started living for today? How would your life change?
Maybe you dream of going to Paris and painting, and maybe that’s not possible right this minute. But what if you decided (there’s that word again) that you were going to start – TODAY to make it happen before your life was tied up in a nice, neat little package? What if you actually stopped putting your dreams on hold and began making plans for them to come to life?
What if you took action steps to make your dream a reality? How would you feel?
I remember dreaming about moving somewhere new…living a simpler life, lying in bed at night thinking about it, and I used to think…”Some day we’ll do this. Some day we’ll get out of this city and some day we’ll fall asleep at night without all this noise and some day, I’ll sit in my backyard, listen to the sounds of the country and stare at the stars.” And then I decided that my some day was NOW!
I wasn’t going to wait until I couldn’t appreciate my life. I was going on this big adventure now…and I did. We left Los Angeles and we moved to Franklin, Tennessee, and although I don’t live on a farm in the country, I sit outside in my backyard and stare at the star-filled night sky and I fall asleep to the sounds of silence; and even though many of my friends and even family members think I’ve lost my mind – I don’t care, because my SOME DAY is now my reality.
What do you want to take off your SOME DAY list and move to the forefront of your life? Why not start taking some action steps? Begin moving towards your life today and watch what happens!
If you have never seen Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University, I encourage you to watch it. It’s one of the most powerful, poignant speeches I’ve ever heard. I’ve linked it here.
Some day may or may not happen. Can you really afford to sit around finding all the reasons why you have to wait to start living your life?
Make your Some Day Today!
If you don’t know where to begin, try this…
- Start imagining all the wonderful things you want in your life – from the smallest to the most grandiose and write them down.
- Next categorize them according to Physical – the things you want (trust me, it’s okay to want things) then the spiritual – how you want your spiritual life to look and finally to the emotional – relationships, marriage, your relationship with you…anything and everything.
- Now go back through your list and check off 5 (just 5) things that you start doing today that will get you on the road to living fully present and in the NOW!
- Make a decision stop putting you and your life on hold. I’m not saying to book a first class trip to Africa and go into massive debt. I’m saying that there is something on your list you can start doing TODAY!
- This is easy. You can do this. The hardest part is switching your thoughts about your life. Stop settling.
