No one wants a coach, just like no one wants an accountant, until you need one.
This seems like a pretty weird statement to make given that I’m a coach, but it’s true. NO ONE wants a coach. You want a better RESULT!
If you’re new to skiing, you don’t know you need a coach until you decide you want to try a Black Diamond run and you go tumbling down the mountain.
If you want to learn to play golf, do you just go out on the course and try and hit the ball around? I hope not.
If you’re starting a business, do you jump in without any help? Sadly…this is what most people do and they end up in a big mess!
True professionals KNOW that a coach is the quickest, surest way to reach a goal successfully. Think about professional athletes, CEO’s, singers, actors, speakers and trainers. Without a doubt the most successful, have coaches. In fact, it’s pretty cool to have a coach.
So what is it about Life Coaching that is intimidating? Most people have this bizarre notion, that they should somehow just know how to do life, and yet, how many of us were really taught life skills? Oh sure, we’re taught to share and get along, but what about all the other components of life like setting boundaries…how to deal with your Inner Critic…how to manage fear…communication skills…self confidence when it comes to new situations… how to cope with loss or how to transition when life throws you a curve ball?
Most of us were never taught the how to’s of life. Don’t you sometimes wish LIFE came with a How To Guide? It doesn’t, but this is exactly where a coach comes in very handy.
Think about it – how you live in your day-to-day affects every single aspect of your life. Everything is intertwined.
Coaching is not counseling. Coaching helps individuals move forward by setting personal and professional goals that create positive results. Coaches give you tools in a non-judgmental environment, so you design a life that best suits you. Studies have shown that most people who commit to coaching are healthy, successful people who want to want to make a big change in their life or who might be a bit stuck.
A coach provides a supportive, discovery-based framework so you can reach your desired outcomes.
As it relates to life, a coach gives you tools to manage fear, cultivate better relationships, set goals, grow confidence, move through change or transition, communicate better in your marriage, set boundaries, manage anger, and examine what is working and what isn’t in your life.
Can you see how each of these skills will ultimately affect other areas of your life?
And yet…no one wants a coach, because we somehow think that we’re supposed to know everything about life. And how could you? We’re not really taught life skills in school. Most of our parents are trying to figure all this out, so where do we get the lifetime tools that we can apply to every aspect of our lives? Coaching.
Here’s the thing…business coaches are far more effective when the coachee has their life together. They don’t have time or the wherewithall to solve all of your personal challenges.
Athletic coaches need you to be performing at the highest level and if you end up in a slump, imagine how much faster you recover if you have the skills to get out of your head.
If you’re a public speaker, you need to know how to manage fear and stage fright. Life skills.
The truth is that most of us humans struggle with the same challenges. We all want to live productive, exciting, gratifying lives and we often don’t understand why we don’t get what we want. We want better results, right?
Listen…there are a lot of BAD coaches out there. Just like any profession, not everyone is good at their job, but there are plenty of excellent coaches who deliver great results and they do it quickly!
I hear the same thing over and over again from too many women and it goes something like this…
“I really really want to do (fill in the blank) but I have no idea how to do it or where to begin. What if I fail?”
And my response is always the same. “What if you learned the skills you need to make it happen? What if you knew how to manage your inner critic? What if you had the skills to manage uncertainty and fear? You might still fail, but what if you didn’t?”
I never thought I wanted a coach, until I got one. I thought there was something wrong with me. Turns out…I just needed new tools in my life toolbox.
You don’t have to go it alone. In fact, you shouldn’t. You should find a coach who meshes with your personality. You should find someone who’s not afraid to speak the truth. You should find someone who is going to work for you and with you. You should decide if you’re worth it…if you deserve to have the life that you desire. Only you can know that, but…having a coach with a purpose and an end result in mind, changes everything.
I’m a coach and I know that no one wants a coach, until you need one.
