On the road to personal growth and transformation, you’ll find that more boulders show up in your path than pebbles and that’s because change comes with challenges. Learn how to stop sweating the small stuff and set yourself free!
It’s easy to get caught up in the What If’s? The what if’s usually lead you down the path to worry…which leads you to fear…which leads you to paralysis and keeps you stuck in worrying…obsessing and sweating about the small stuff – most of which will never come true or that you can’t control. Life is filled with small stuff it will surely keep you stuck.
My husband sweats the small stuff and it tends to take over his day or days depending upon how much small stuff he’s worrying about. The problem is that the small usually becomes big stuff if we allow it to hold a big place in our brain.
In my opinion small stuff is comprised of the What Ifs that creep into our thought process.
“I can’t do such and such because what if this happens?”
“I can’t start that blog because what if no one reads it?”
“I can’t cook that Julia Childs meal because what if I don’t do it like Julia?” (You won’t if you never try.)
“I can’t ask my boss for a raise (even though I deserve it) because what if I end up losing my job?”
“I can’t try this or that because what if this or that happens?”
“I can’t do this because what will my parents say?” (How old are you?)Small stuff = what ifs and it's no way to live your life! Click To Tweet
My response to what if thoughts are What if it doesn’t happen? or What if it does? Will Armageddon happen? Doubtful.
When you get stuck worrying or sweating the small stuff, here’s what you get:
SENSE of INSECURITY
INSECURITY…the list just goes on and on.
Clearly our personalities have something to do with how we handle the little things in life, but there are ways to change how you react to the little things that will always show up in life.
First you must KNOW that most things are little things and at the end of the day – they have little or no impact on the outcome of your life.
You should also know that it IS possible to change the way you see and react to your world.First – Stop reacting and start responding. You do not have to be the bi-product of your thoughts. In fact the sooner you learn to manage your negative, worrisome thoughts…the quicker you’ll be on your way to not sweating the small stuff.
When you feel worry coming on because you CAN feel it in your gut, right? Here’s what you do.
Stop! Just stop and change what you’re doing. Tony Robbins calls this changing your state. When you change your state, your brain has to change with you. It’s proven. It works and it will work for you.
Next – take a few deep centering breaths…close your eyes and see your What if differently. Try visualizing the horrible what if (small stuff) working out in your favor.
Now ask yourself if what you’re thinking is rooted in real fear or if it’s just one of those moments when that part of your mind (the snake thoughts) are entering because it doesn’t like any kind of change? Chances are it’s just your snake thoughts.
Reframing the outcome in your favor is the simplest way to stop sweating the small stuff and begin seeing the possibility in the what if? What if everything was going to be okay? What if you were going to be all right? What if it was okay to take a leap of faith and try something new. What if misplacing your keys was not a sign that you have something wrong with you. What if you could use your fear to your advantage and do something great.
Really…don’t sweat the small stuff because almost everything is just that – small stuff.
